invites applications for a

Butte Reporter

This position works remotely in Butte under the daily supervision of the MTPR News Director with moderate independence following assigned methods, priorities, and timelines for completing news for broadcast. The position will also coordinate with the MTPR News Director on news content production and delivery. The Reporter must adhere to professional journalism standards and accommodate complex and rapidly changing circumstances under deadline pressure. This position may supervise student interns.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

News research using internet, newspapers, and other news sources.

Develop and maintain news sources.

Produce and deliver newscast reports and feature length stories using field recording kits, audio equipment and computers.

Upload audio, video, and text content to website, podcasting platforms, and social media platforms as appropriate.

Represent Montana Public Radio in Butte and answer public inquiries about the station and news policy.

The Reporter will develop knowledge on their beat of Butte and Southwest Montana, including but not limited to: rural issues, environmental issues, veterans’ affairs, the natural resources industry, and tourism.

Required Skills

Knowledge of journalism ethics and standards of fairness and balance.

Excellent speaking and writing skills.

Significant technical knowledge of media computer applications, audio recording units, digital cameras, video equipment, audio mixers and audio editing program.

Ability to research and comprehend complex issues and translate them into clear, concise news reports.

Ability to interview, record, write and digitally edit audio, video and still photography files.

Professional demeanor, behavior, and ability to interact with a wide variety of people.

Ability to post audio, video and photography online across multiple platforms.

Ability to convert radio broadcast content to online reports.

Ability to perform under deadline pressures and highly emotional circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field.

Two (2) years of experience in a reporting role, preferably in public radio or television.

Since then we have become a media network serving western and central Montana and beyond.
