Job Description
Under direction, to assist with public and news media relations and marketing promotional efforts; and to write and edit marketing and information materials.
Typical Tasks
Assists in developing, coordinating, conducting and evaluating marketing, outreach, public awareness and promotional efforts;
Assists in public and news media relations;
Makes public presentations before various groups;
Plans, writes and edits material for advertisements, news releases, internal communications, promotional events and other public information;
Interviews department officials, employees, representatives from various groups and organizations and the general public to secure information;
Coordinates project activities internally and externally;
Coordinates the preparation of timetables, brochures and information signs;
Assists in the scheduling of and purchases media space and time;
Prepares reports requiring the collection and analysis of data;
Guides and trains other workers;
Performs related work as required.
Employment Standards
Possession of a California driver's license.
Training, education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Experience Note:
A candidate would normally have the equivalent of graduation from a four year accredited college with a major in marketing, journalism, communications or a related field and one year of experience in journalism, advertising, marketing or public relations.
Knowledge of:
Principles and techniques of effective public communications and public relations;
Principles and techniques of advertising copy writing, layout and production;
Customs and practices of various public information media;
Techniques of interviewing.
Ability to:
Communicate ideas and concepts through creative writing;
Conceptualize print and broadcast advertising;
Plan and organize outreach and promotional activities;
Guide and train others;
Understand and effectively communicate technical data to the media and other sources;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
