Do you excel in an environment that values exploration and discovery? We have a universe of opportunities waiting for you!

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is NASA's lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Our core competency is the end-to-end implementation of unprecedented robotic space missions to study Earth, the Solar System, and the Universe.

JPL, located in Pasadena, California, has a casual, campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

We are proud to be part of NASA and Caltech, as we explore the universe and make history through new discoveries.

We aim to do things never done before and to go places few can go. We dare mighty you?

JPL's Video Design and Production Group (VDAP), within the Communications and Education Directorate, is responsible for producing a wide range of rich media products used to support our projects and missions both internally and for the public. This group has an exciting opportunity for a 3D modeler/animator to join their team.

Reporting to the VDAP Group Supervisor, this position will work closely with project and mission planners to develop highly detailed and scientifically accurate 3D animations to be used in mission proposals, technical team meetings, concept demonstrations, and in publicly released video products.

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualization, Computer Animation, Fine Arts or related technical discipline with 9 years of work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with photorealistic animation of natural phenomena, employing particle systems, hard and soft body dynamics, and procedural and/or animated textures.
  • Highly proficient with modeling, texturing, lighting, and animating using commercial 3D animation software (e.g. LightWave 3D, Maya, Modo, 3D Coat, and/or Mudbox)
  • Experience utilizing engineering models, physical models, and data acquired from a variety of Earth and space missions and experiments to create animations with high visual appeal and scientific/technical accuracy
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Suite software.
  • Strong technical and communication skills, together with a desire to work in collaboration with scientists, engineers, digital artists, and media relations professionals in a research environment.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects at any given time and complete them under tight deadlines.

*The ideal candidate will have knowledge of applicable JPL policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations.

Caltech/JPL is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action employer. It is the policy of Caltech/JPL to provide equal employment opportunities, actively recruit, and include for employment consideration all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information.> src=>

Company Profile
Do not go where the path may lead," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. "Go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail." That could be the motto of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Trailblazing has been the business of JPL since it was established by the California Institute of Technology in the 1930s. America's first satellite, Explorer 1 which launched in 1958, was created at JPL. In the decades that followed, we sent the first robotic craft to the moon and out across the solar system, reconnoitering all of the planets. Pushing the outer edge of exploration, in fact, is the reason JPL exists as a NASA laboratory.
