Duties & Responsibilities
The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy is a research center at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The Center analyzes the power and impact of media, in all its forms, on public policy and politics.
The Information Disorder Lab at the Shorenstein Center is looking for enterprising, versatile journalists or researchers to track mis- and disinformation online ahead of the November 2018 midterms. It is part of a research and learning project, designed to help newsrooms, academics and technology companies collaborate and encourage real-time verification of information on the social web. We will bring together a team of researchers who will track and test different ways of responding to misleading, manipulated and fabricated information, using the 2018 U.S. midterm elections as a test case.
The ideal candidate has experience analyzing online content in real-time, the ability to work autonomously, and sound journalistic judgment. The journalist/researcher will produce short alerts and advisories based on emerging disinformation narratives, case studies or campaigns, and will build intelligence about how digital communities exploit various social media platforms in order to sow social and political discord. The role involves working in tandem with other journalists and developers in complex breaking news situations.
We are hiring six people in this position, and they will all report to the Manager of the Information Disorder Lab.
Bachelor's or advanced degree in relevant areas such as journalism, communications, political science, international relations
Ability to collect, organize, and analyze large amounts of data through qualitative and quantitative methods, including but not limited to Chartbeat and Google News Lab.
Experience working with OSINT resources and tools such as TweetDeck, InVid, Tweetreach, Wikimapia, or RSS management tools
Conversant in academic research in technology and media.
Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
Well organized, able to prioritize, have strong attention to detail and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated leadership skills, ability to work with minimal supervision, excellent judgment.
