The position is in the Office of the Reporter of Decisions of the United States Tax Court. The Assistant Reporter of Decisions provides service, advice, and guidance on accepted rules pertaining to official Tax Court publications. The Assistant Reporter reports to and provides assistance to the Reporter in the review, preparation, filing, and publication of the opinions, reports, and other official Tax Court issuances for public distribution. In the absence of the Reporter, the incumbent assumes the functions of that officer and reports directly to the Court Administrator or the Chief Judge.
Special Notes: This position requires a satisfactory preliminary suitability determination and a security background check, including a credit check, a Federal income tax check, and a criminal check.
Any male born after December 31, 1959, and subsequently selected for this position must certify before appointment that he is registered for the military selective service. Not having registered with the selective service, may disqualify an applicant from employment consideration.
Special Rating Factors (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required by the Position):
to provide enough information, either separately or in a résumé, which addresses each Special Rating Factor and provides detailed evidence of the knowledge in the form of clear, concise examples of accomplishments and degree of responsibility.
Knowledge of Federal tax law, including knowledge of Federal tax statutory, regulatory, and caselaw sufficient to perform prefiling editorial review of Tax Court opinions.
Demonstrated ability and professional experience in editing technical legal material in good English prose style, following a set of established style rules; extensive knowledge of correct use of English in legal writing. Ability to detect and suggest appropriate changes for grammatical errors such as dangling participles and lack of agreement and for word usage errors.
Ability to competently follow a style manual and the Bluebook.
Skill in legal research methods.
Ability to take appropriate initiative and use sound judgment, and a tactful and courteous manner in order to work effectively with opinion authors, Reporter's Office staff, and other Tax Court personnel, Government agencies, the press, and the public.
