News Editor Jobs

A news editor plans and executes the layout of a newspaper on a daily basis. A news editor receives news copy, photographs, and dummy page layouts marked to indicate the columns occupied by advertising. A news editor confers with management and editorial staff members regarding the placement of developing news stories. A news editor determines the placement of stories based on relative significance, available space, and knowledge of layout principles. A news editor marks layout sheets to indicate the position of each story and any accompanying photographs. A news editor approves the proofs submitted by the composing room. A news editor may write or revise headlines and also may edit copy. A news editor decides which stories are newsworthy and gives reporters their assignments. A news editor corrects mistakes and stylizes the articles to the fit the given newspaper’s format. A news editor usually decides how the news will look.
A news editor should have a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in journalism or another liberal arts field and courses in writing, history, political science, and economics. A news editor should have a minimum of two years of editing experience. A news editor should have excellent editing skills, writing skills, computer skills, and interpersonal skills. A news editor must be able to work independently and under deadline pressure.
