News Assistant Jobs

A news assistant compiles, dispenses, and files news stories and related copy to assist editorial personnel in a broadcast newsroom. A news assistant telephones government agencies and sports facilities and monitors other stations to obtain weather, traffic, and sports information. A news assistant also telephones people involved in news events to obtain further information or to arrange for on-air or background interviews by news broadcasting personnel. A news assistant files and retrieves news scripts, printouts, and recording tapes. A news assistant may make written copies of news stories called in from remote locations and may also record, edit, and play back tapes of news stories to assist in production. A news assistant provides editorial support in coordinating scripts, graphics, and videos and also provides support to producers through research. A news assistant recruits writers and photographers, administers contracts, helps to hire and manage interns, applies to journalism contests, keeps records, and develops story ideas for assignments.
A news assistant should have a degree in a relevant field and one or more years of experience. A strong candidate must work well in a team environment and be a quick learner. A strong candidate should also have excellent reading comprehension skills and computer skills. A news assistant must be able to accurately follow instructions under deadline pressure and must be able to work long hours that may include weekends and holidays.
