News Director Jobs
A news director is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of a news department at a radio or television station. A news director confers with executives and production staff members regarding budgets, station policy, news coverage of special events, and production problems. A news director originates or approves feature ideas and sends those ideas to news personnel for implementation. A news director monitors news developments and reviews edited copy and news film. A news director approves program content or issues directions for changes or modifications. A news director coordinates news staff activities with the programming, traffic, and film editing departments. A news director hires and fires news staff and evaluates their performance. A news director also operates video equipment to review and approve news film or tape. A news director may write or type news copy, letters, and memos and may also perform production duties or directly supervise those performing them.
A news director must have achieved at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field and have a minimum of five years of experience managing a newsroom. A strong candidate should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be a strong leader, teacher, and motivator. A news director should be able to head the day-to-day operations of a newsroom, guiding news staff and maintaining journalistic and legal standards.
