Getting Involved in Online Radio: How to Get Started

by Silas Reed
Are you someone who loves the idea of being able to get ahead with broadcasting and do you love the idea of many people listening to your voice? If so, you will find that radio, with a strong concentration on online radio and Internet radio is a great way to do it! With more and more people getting online every day, you will find that creating a show where you are going to be able to broadcast yourself through Internet radio is something that can get your career off to a great start. If you are a wonderfully creative person and if you love the idea of introducing your creativity to the world at large you should think about launching your own Internet radio show.

First, start with some planning. What kind of Internet radio show do you want to run, and what kind of themes do you want to cover? There are plenty of people who are interested in doing another top 20 show on pop music, so how are you going to be able to get around that? If you are ready to investigate a narrow and specialized market, you will find that there are definitely listeners out there. Think about who your audience is and what they are like. How old are they, and what level of education do they have? Is there a geographic limitation that you are trying to reach or is your audience going to live in a certain place? The more you know about what you are doing and who you are doing it for, the better off you are going to be in the long run.

If you are in a place where you are looking into getting your show on the air, so to speak, think about what kind of content you are going to be able to put out there. Are you interested in things like interviews or reports on what is going on? Are you planning to do investigative reports or do you intend to have readers call in? What kind of music can you present and how are you going to be able to do that? This is something that you need to do when you are thinking about getting started with your work and unless you know what kind of content you are going to present, you will find that you are in a lot of trouble. How are you going to hook your listeners in, and how are you going to be able to move forward and keep their attention?

Once you have figured who is going to be listening to your show, you will discover that you are in a place where you need to look into what your options are for advertisers. Most radio work is funded through advertisers and you need to think about others who may be trying to reach your target audience. For instance, if you are someone who is interested in doing a local show, you will find that going to work with restaurants, convenience stores, and other local venues can be quite important. Also think about what your audience needs and how you can supply it to them!

Remember that your radio show needs a website. You need a catchy handle and you need to make sure that you have plenty of interesting resources for people to work with. Take some time and think about what people are going to want to find when they head to your site. More information about what you are doing and interesting supplementary material about your voice work can be quite important. If you have done an interview with an author lately, take some time and make sure that you consider linking to their site from yours.

When you are in a place where you need to look into how you are moving forward and if you are ready to get the right kind of attention, remember that you should see how Internet radio can treat you. This might be a great way to showcase your creativity and the work that you would love to do, so put your thinking cap on and make sure that you put together the right foundation. This is something that can take a lot of time and energy, but you might find that it is all worth it in the end!
